of dietary fat, or of a particular sort of fat. In support of these beliefs, we are presented with evidence of an epidemiological nature. We are told, for example, that the higher the average fat-consumption in a country, the higher the mortality due to coronary thrombosis (coronary mortality). Or we are told that the rise in the number of coronary deaths in this country was accompanied by a rise in the consumption of hydrogenated fats. From time to time, however, it becomes evident that some of the epidemiological data do not fit these simple hypotheses. For example, in one investigation the chance of Buffering from coronary disease was found to be twice

Flaws, Fallacies and Facts: Reviewing the Early History of the Lipid and Diet/Heart Hypotheses

The lipid hypothesis of coronary heart disease proposes that a high total cholesterol level has a causative role in coronary heart disease (CHD), specifically in the development of atherosclerosis. It forms the basis for formulating target levels of serum cholesterol and hence the widespread use of statins for lowering cholesterol. An extension of the lipid hypothesis is the diet/heart hypothes...

Coronary endothelial function is preserved with chronic endothelin receptor antagonism in experimental hypercholesterolemia in vitro.

Hypercholesterolemia is associated with increased circulating and tissue endothelin-1 immunoreactivity, decreased nitric oxide (NO) activity, and altered endothelial function. We tested the hypothesis that chronic endothelin receptor antagonism preserves endothelial function and increases NO in experimental porcine hypercholesterolemia. Pigs were randomized to 3 groups: Group 1, a 2% high-chole...

Dietary polyunsaturated fat decreases coronary artery atherosclerosis in a pediatric-aged population of African green monkeys.

The hypothesis tested was that juvenile African green monkeys consuming diets enriched with n-6 polyunsaturated fat from birth until young adulthood would have significantly less coronary artery atherosclerosis than comparable animals consuming diets enriched with saturated fat. African green monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops, n = 108) of both sexes were fed atherogenic diets (0.8 mg cholesterol/...
